At times, we stand in our own way as we strive for a certain goal. Our thoughts could act as obstacles that hinder our ability to reach our definition of success. This definitely does not go unnoticed in the world of sports and athletics.


Whether you’re preparing for a big competition or just wanting to try something new, everyone needs a little boost to train every now and then! Note, healthy boosts. We don’t mean completely changing your lifestyle through diets or negatively pushing yourself to train by comparing yourself to others – those aren’t sustainable or healthy!


Instead, here are 6 fun and positive ways to motivate yourself!! These are anti-diet, body-accepting, mental health-focused strategies, curated to meet your needs!

Also, not everyone is in a place where they can exercise, and that is ok too! Everyone’s journey is different, so what works for one won’t necessarily work for another.


With that in mind, have fun reading about these steps!


1. Think about the future!

Yes, preparing to workout and the act of training can be extremely tiring, and often, you may find that you’re dragging yourself out to train. One thing that really helps athletes is to think about the end goal and the feeling after a workout!


Every time you train, no matter how long or short it is, you better yourself for whatever you want your end goal to be!


It is okay to feel unmotivated. It’s completely normal. It’s also okay to rest and let yourself be lazy sometimes. However, by adjusting your mindset to think about the positive effects of training, you can really get yourself pumped up!


2. Focus on one thing at a time!

Especially during a workout, it can be daunting and exhausting to think about everything you need to do. Personally, it has always helped me to just focus on the exercise I’m doing at the moment without thinking about what I have left. It definitely is easier said than done, but once you get into the habit, you’ll get the hang of it!


After each set, lap, or whatever you are doing, you are getting closer to the end! Let yourself feel the increasing strength and stamina with each motion. It can be challenging to maintain motivation when you think about the long length or the intensity of your training. If you take it one step at a time, perhaps you will realize that time may pass by much quicker than you think!


3. Find out what you like!

Workouts are always more fun when you’re doing something you enjoy! Of course, it is essential to focus on all parts of the body. Still, you could somehow incorporate your favorite exercise and make it useful for different areas!


Everyone has different preferences! Some people prefer weightlifting, others prefer more cardio-based- it all depends on you. If you’re training for something specific, like a particular sport, then there are still plenty of ways to make it fun while working hard! Maybe you like working out with people. Perhaps you have that one favorite song that pumps you up! Create an environment that is suitable for you and your training. It will make the whole process much more enjoyable!


4. Lessen your social media usage


This may sound a bit out of place since people often say they look at other athletes for inspiration! That is great as well but make sure it is to a healthy extent!


Remember, you’re your own person. No one is exactly like you. Train for yourself- your path will look different than everyone else’s, and that is 100% okay!


If you took some time off your phone and social media, it could really prevent unhealthy comparisons. You wouldn’t feel so let down by seeing someone else’s results. Instead, you’d prioritize yourself and realize your own happiness more than anything!


5. Try new things!

When you’re continually doing the same kind of training, day in and day out, it can lead to burning out and overall weariness. Take that as a sign to spice things up!


Let’s say you like running. Take a different route than your usual one to give you a change of scenery! Switch up your workout exercises. Even better, try something you’ve never done before. Don’t feel like you’re necessarily bound to having the same exact routine.


Trying something new always makes workouts more exciting! Just make sure you’re keeping it at what you’re capable of doing. We don’t want you getting injured!


6. Productivity during rest days

People tend to have more energy when they’re doing something. Rest days obviously are meant to recover and take a break, but there are plenty of activities you could do to pass your time!


As long as you’re taking time to mentally and physically rest, doing something that stimulates your mind and keeps you engaged will actually replenish your energy!


That might look like picking up a new hobby, cooking something fun, doing some chores around the house, or safely meeting with friends! The sky is your limit – just make sure to stay safe!



Remember, if you’re having a difficult time with these, you’re not alone! It is entirely alright to feel sluggish and tired sometimes. Especially with our circumstances, it is more unusual than ever.


Give yourself time, don’t be too harsh on yourself. Reward yourself with the days you do feel productive! We are each in different positions and stages– some people may be more active, while others are taking the time to rest! Either way is healthy as long as you prioritize your mental health. The physical health tags right along with it.
